To be able to play piano in an all-star tribute to one of the deepest to ever touch the instrument -- needless to say this an incredible honor! I can't wait.

Secret Show TBA
Friday, August 26!

Hold the date for something really special I'm cooking up for Friday, August 26. Put it on your calendar now. I'll explain more later.

That's all for now, but I will definitely be in touch again before the summer is over. I hope you're staying healthy, soaking up the extra sun rays from our lengthening days, and finding time to notice the small miracles that surround us every day. Even though it's been a challenging few weeks (months, years), I'm charging forward with optimism about this summer.

In gratitude for your continued support,

- Michael

Imperfect Intervals -- Two Shows This Week

Hey Everyone,

Just popping in to remind you that I have two shows coming up this week. I'll be performing the music from Imperfect Intervals, my recent minimal solo piano release. Two shows, one in Detroit and one in Ann Arbor. Details:

Friday 3/25 | Ann Arbor
St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church
306 N Division St, Ann Arbor, MI 48104
7pm
$10 admission

Thursday 3/24 | Detroit
Trinosophes
1464 Gratiot Ave, Detroit, MI 48207
Doors at 6pm
$10 admission

Masks required at both shows.

Imperfect Intervals is a meditation on self-acceptance. Emergent sonic structures reveal themselves, like a river carving out its own path. Released by 1473 Records in July 2021 and recorded during a mad two weeks in October/November 2020, the nine pieces on the record are documents of an improvisational process that prioritizes resonance, generous listening, and imperfection.

I'm opening for (and playing with) Virago, as they release their recent recording of Harriet Steinke's "Listening for Bells."

Additionally, I have some fun ones coming up this spring. If you're in Southeast Michigan, would be great to see you as the birds start to chirp and the flowers start to bloom:

Saturday 3/26: w/ Marion Hayden, Blue Llama, Ann Arbor
Wednesday 3/30: w/ Noah Jackson, Cliff Bell's, Detroit
Sunday 4/3: Malis/Ishmael Ali/Jonathan Taylor, Ziggy's, Ypsilanti
Saturday 4/16: Malis/Derek Worthington, Ziggy's
Thursday 4/28: w/ Jonathan Taylor, Blue Llama, Ann Arbor
Tuesday 5/17: w/ Kaleigh Wilder, Kerrytown Concert House, Ann Arbor
Wednesday 6/1: Solo Piano, Headlining AEPEX Fest, Ziggy's

Check out www.michaelmalis.com/events for the latest here.

This may be the last time you hear from me until late May/early June. I've got big things to share with you for this summer, but for now I'm keeping it all under wraps. When the time is right, I can't wait to let you know what I've got cooking up.

In the meantime, I hope to see you this week, or sometime this spring.

Thanks for your continued support,
- Michael

Imperfect Intervals - Two Live Performances!

Hey Friends,

I hope 2022 has gotten off to a splendid start for you all.

I'm writing to let you all know about two exciting performances coming up. I'll be performing the music from my recent solo piano release, Imperfect Intervals, live on back to back nights in Detroit and Ann Arbor. Details below. If you're in Southeast Michigan, please join me.

Thursday 3/24 Trinosophes (Detroit): $10, 6:00pm doors
Get advance tickets here: https://trinosophes.com/
Masks required

Friday 3/25 St. Andrew's Church (Ann Arbor): $10, 7:00pm doors
Get tickets at the door
Masks required

I have a lot to say about this music, but I'll save most of that for the show. I'll only say this: I never thought I would have the chance to play a full concert of this music. It's among the most intimate music I've ever made, and I don't know if I'll ever get a chance to perform it again. If you're interested in this project, these shows might be your only chance to see it in its fullest form.

On these shows, I'll also be playing with Virago as they launch their recent album of music by Harriet Steinke, Listening for Bells. They're some of my favorite musicians anywhere to play with, and I'm looking forward to their set as well. All in all, these shows will be special! If you're in our area, it would be lovely to see you.

Looking ahead to this summer, I have a few big things in the works that I can't tell you about quite yet. Rest assured, when the time is right I'll make sure you know what's going on.

Hope you all are great. Thanks, as always, for your continued support.

- Michael

Michael Malis Solo Piano at Edgefest

Hey everyone,

I hope you’re having a happy and healthy fall. I’m just popping in to let you know that if you’re in Southeast Michigan, I’ll be playing a solo piano set at Edgefest — our local festival of experimental improvised music that’s really so much more than a local festival. Other artists on the festival include heavy hitters like Matthew Shipp, Angelica Sanchez, William Parker, and honestly too many others to name. I’m honored to be on the same stage as them. I’ll be sharing some new music, and I’m really looking forward to hearing some great music too.

I have a special relationship with Edgefest, both as a performer and an audience member. I’ve been lucky enough to share the Edgefest stage with some great artists, including Ken Filiano, William Hooker, and John Lindberg. And as an audience member, I’ve seen more mind-blowing performances than I can count. One that will always stick with me was seeing Muhal Richard Abrams, Roscoe Mitchell, and George Lewis. Some of the most beautiful, startling, and exhilarating music I’ve ever heard in my life.

Note: according to Kerrytown Concert House’s website, proof of vaccination or a recent negative Covid test is required of all patrons and artists, and masks will be required of audience members.

I’m playing on Thursday, October 28 at 7:00pm. Get your tickets for the day or the whole weekend here:
